A great joy of mine is to put Scripture verses to music. The music is written and combined with verses from the Bible to help people, young and old, to memorize God’s Word much quicker and easier. How did this ministry begin?
        In 1974 I began teaching grades 3 through 6 in a Christian school near Chattanooga, TN.  After lunch I would grab my guitar and we would sing choruses together.  It was great fun and a refreshing break from the academics of the day.
        Some of the younger students were slow at learning their weekly memory verse and I pondered how I could help these youngsters learn God's Word. We had sung songs like, “I am the resurrection and the life,” and “I will sing of the mercies of the Lord forever,” so I thought, “Why not compose a tune for this week's memory verse?”  We started singing Ephesians 4:32, 1 Thess. 5:18 and Colossians 3:23.  This was so successful that I began writing tunes for other verses as well.  My pastor and friends were very encouraging and the ministry expanded.

What is the desired purpose?
        The motive for this project was not only to teach verses but also to help us meditate on the Scripture.  I frequently have a song running through my head.  When the words to the song are Scripture, it causes me to think over and over of what God has said.  Those who meditate on Scripture have some wonderful promises they can claim (Psalm 1:1-3; Joshua 1:8, etc.). My youngest son goes to sleep each night listening to one of the tapes and can sing many of the verses.  A person once confessed, “I had a bad attitude toward so and so, but over and over in my mind went the words and music for Prov. 28:13, 'He that covereth his sins shall not prosper.' I was motivated to get my attitude straightened out with the Lord.”
        I set these guidelines: 1) I would use the King James Version; 2) I would use the exact words of the verse(s), not paraphrase them.

How were the verses chosen?
        Often while reading the Bible, the Lord would speak to me through a verse and I would ask Him for a tune to help me remember it.  Other people also shared verses with me and even asked me to write a tune for a particular verse.  Too, I admit that my sense of humor motivated me to write some of the songs (like Prov. 21:9 & 27:15). I love to tease.  Other humor came from the children themselves.  After teaching Psalm 127:3, one mother questioned the wisdom of teaching her child a song about underwear for she came home singing- “the fruit of the loom is His reward.”

How did the music get printed?
        For some time I sought a means of preserving these songs in printed form.  I wrote out the melodies by hand but this was tedious and unattractive. The answer was a computer program that could transcribe and print music more professionally.  Later I was able to play the song on a musical keyboard directly onto a staff where it could be edited, arranged, played, and printed.  The project evolved from melody lines and chord names in the first books, to full accompaniment by books 7 and 8.

How were the tapes and CD's recorded?
        The first tapes contain more songs because they were done with the guitar, usually sung two or three times each.  Once I got a keyboard, I was able to include accompaniment only for those who want to use the tapes to teach others. Tapes seven and eight are recorded in split trax exactly as it is written in the music book. The cost is kept low because our family did all the recording, duplicating, designing, printing, collating, and distributing as a family ministry. The tapes are not designed to be performances but teaching aids.
