Why are we told that the Lord was with David?

We are told of Joseph that "the Lord was with him" four times and of David three times. This was true in three different ways: 1) God is everywhere so the Lord in that sense is with everyone. (Jer 23:23-24) 2) God is, in a special way, with His own children. Matt. 29:20 3) God is with us to bless us and make His presence known to others through us when we love Him and obey Him. It is in this sense that the Lord was with Joseph, David, Abraham, Gideon, and Moses. (I Samuel 16:12, 18; 18:12, 14)
