In what way was David a man after God’s heart?

God said he would seek a man after His own heart (1 Sam. 13:14). David was that man. By linking Psalm 23 with this statement, we conclude that David had a shepherd heart, because God had a shepherd heart. What are the three essentials of a shepherd heart? 1) Surrender toward God. This is the character quality of humility for when we truly let God be God in our lives, then we will experience the truth that all my success is directly or indirectly the result of the investment of God and others in my life. This of course leads to a grateful heart. 2) Satisfaction toward myself. This is the character qualityof contentment. This does not mean we should not want to be better. Instead it is the satisfaction God speaks of in 1 Tim 6:8, "having food and raiment, let us be therewith content." When we are content with things, then we can concentrate our energies on numbers 1 and 3. 3) Selfless service toward others. This is the character quality of meekness. Meekness is not weakness but is strength under control. If a small child kicks me as hard as he can, I am meek when I realize I have a right to kick him back, but I choose not to. When I give my rights and expectations to God, then I am practicing meekness.
