December 26th marks the anniversary of one of the worse tsunami disasters in history. What lessons did we learn from it?
December 26th marks the anniversary of one of the worse tsunami disasters in history. On that date in 2004 a giant wave spread through the Indian Ocean, killing 150,000 people from a dozen countries. The pictures on the web show people carrying on their recreation at the beach as the wave approached. Many of the victims were totally unaware of the disaster about to strike.
Yet, remarkably, in contrast to this human death toll, no dead animals were found! Eye witnesses said they observed elephants screaming and running for higher ground, dogs refusing to go outdoors, flamingos abandoning their low-lying breeding areas, and zoo animals rushing into their shelters and refusing to be enticed out. Sri Lankan wildlife officials have said the giant waves that killed over 24,000 people along the Indian Ocean island’s coast seemingly missed wild beasts, with no dead animals found. “No elephants are dead, not even a dead hare or rabbit. I think animals can sense disaster. They have a sixth sense. They know when things are happening,” H.D. Ratnayake, deputy director of Sri Lanka’s Wildlife Department, said. “Wildlife experts believe animals’ more acute hearing and other senses might enable them to hear or feel the Earth’s vibration, tipping them off to approaching disaster long before humans realize what’s going on.” (National Geographic)
Is this not amazing! Man, who supposedly has evolved to the highest form of life, cannot figure out what animals of all kinds know naturally? The contrast is not just due to inferior senses; it was also caused by willing ignorance. The story is told of junior high student who saved her entire class and family by warning them of the impending tsunami when the coastal waters dramatically receded that day. She simply believed what she had been taught in earth science class and pleaded with the others to run to higher ground. Others knew what she knew but ignored the signs.
People have asked, “Why would God do such a thing?” A better question is, “Why did not the people heed the warnings God gave?” A far greater disaster than this is promised for the future. Peter gives this warning: “The elements shall melt with fervent heat.” (2 Peter 3:10-12) Yet many live as the pre-tsunami people were, as if all things will continue indefinitely as they have in the past and they will never be called to account for their lives. A wise person believes the promises and acts on them, fleeing to Jesus, the only Savior! (pictures of the disaster may be found at http://www.tsunamis.com/tsunami-pictures.html )
