What is it like being a shepherd?
I have never been a shepherd, and never taken care of sheep. However, as I examined the previous list of three qualities of a shepherd from Scripture, I realized that, of all the people I have known over the years, the one who best exemplifies a shepherd heart is Ruby Swanson, my wife. Three characteristics best summarize her: a love for God, contentment with things (she is very hard to buy for), and a deep desire to serve others. These are indeed the marks of a shepherd, surrendered to God, satisfied with things, selfless servant to others.

How is a Shepherd’s heart opposite of human nature?
Paul tells us that all temptation is common to man (1 Cor. 10:13), i.e. it can be traced to one of three heart motivations. These are found many places in Scripture but we will use the wording of 1 John 2:16.

How does the Trinity build in us a shepherd’s heart?
The work of the Father is first to sanctify. He knows us and draws us to Himself. Second, He supplies so that we have all we need. Third, He gives security because He alone can promise that our good done for His glory will not be forgotten.

In what way was David a man after God’s heart?
God said he would seek a man after His own heart (1 Sam. 13:14). David was that man. By linking Psalm 23 with this statement, we conclude that David had a shepherd heart, because God had a shepherd heart.
